Local charcoal is produced, delivered and utilised locally in the UK.
The alternative of imported charcoal requires
long-haul global transportation which has been shown to increase fossil
fuel consumption by over 85%.
Britain's
barbecues burn approximately 60,000 tonnes of charcoal a year. But almost
nine out of every ten bags of charcoal are imported. Most of this imported
charcoal comes from environmentally sensitive areas or endangered forests
in West Africa, South East Asia and South America.

The
volumes and distances are huge requiring huge fossil fuel consumption
to power the transportation, which in turn means large CO2 emissions
fuelling increased global warming. It may even be marked FSC certified,
but how can it be environmentally friendly if it is transported
halfway around the world?
